Link: https://edublogs.org
Content:
LW3e. describe, using examples, how developments in technology have advanced biological understanding, eg vaccines, biotechnology, stem-cell research and in-vitro fertilisation
f. discuss some advantages and disadvantages of the use and applications of biotechnology, including social and ethical considerations
The use of a blog for students to write discussion gives the assignment a chance to become more personalised. Students will feel more free to discuss their personal thoughts on a blog than a formal report. Blogs also allow students to improve their critical thinking skills as they read up on a technology and attempt to formulate a response.
Activity: Students will be asked to keep a weekly blog for one month. The topic of the blog will be “developments in technology related to biological science”. As homework, students must write 150 words discussing the impact of a development in biological technology eg. Vaccines or stem-cell research, including advantages and disadvantages as well as social and ethical considerations. At the end of the month, students must also have commented on another student’s blogpost responding to the technology that the other student has chosen.
